Statues

In the past few weeks I have visited a large quantity of museums and have observed a very new environment. The key aspects of these observations is the classical sculpture. For one thing it is everywhere and out of most things I have seen what appears to be in the most abundant quantity is figures. The bust more importantly lends itself to the type of art I have been creating. The 'bust' is defined as being a sculpture of the head shoulders and chest, within perfect proportion these are created. This is very much in relation to perspective. When someone looks around they immediately take it in. It is what defines the third dimension that we see. When a classical 'bust' is observed a similar feeling is had.

These figures created on each column are in the light of the 'ideal', as in perfect proportion, undeniable. The contradiction is, that these types of proportions are not seen in reality, yet they define it in this tradition.

These are two pencil drawings, titled 'Heads 3' and 'Heads 4' that I have done based upon busts I have seen the the city and in the art history museum. The illusion of the column serves as the visual element that links the impossibility of proportion of the heads to the impossibility of perspective of the columns. They are both 8" x 11".

The beginning

The first project I have undertaken is the simple reconstruction of the area of Vienna that we are currently staying in, around the 8th district between the hotel we are staying in and the art institute we work in. The first primary construction I have done is of the Leopold Museum and the Museum Modern Kunst.
These two museums house very important work consisting around the time of Vienna Secession which in short, was the artists removal from formalism and historical painting. This argued that there is no definitive aesthetic encompassing artists in Vienna around the time of the later 1800s and onward.

Portaits while viewing art

These photographs were taken in the Leoplold Museum which was part of the greater Mo Muk Museum in Vienna (Museum of Modern Art).

The appearance of my figure puts the each work of art in context. It is very frequent to see a master work by Klimt or Scheile every few moments in the city of Vienna, especially in the district we are currently staying in. These figures, often disfigured and discolored in Scheile's work have become posterchildren, literally! Every bus, bus stop, junk shop window, and often in company of signage, harbors these images.

Aptly named 'Progression Z' If you are looking for meaning in this sculpture, look to its surroundings. David Meyer described it as 'jewelry-like' in his attempt to convey the idea that it was a 'touch' to a greater whole. The large grass around this steel piece make up the already existing. This piece was meant to bring eye to the grass, its tranquility and indifference. There is much to be learned in life from what is unconscious; plants.

Finally some new work

'Factory' was conceived in September of this year and completed toward the end of October. It is entirely made of steel, weighing about 500 pounds. The basis for this piece came from a drawing (coming soon) and was developed through a series of smaller models.

Sea of Cortez (digital print)

The three images combined here are line drawings done with pen scanned and manipulated in illustrator. The image on the top is in fact the same image just flipped and distorted. The piece was meant to place great emphasis on the negative space between the apparent spitting ocean and raining clouds. Altogether they create a vast infinite amount of space with three layers, clouds, sky and sea.

Bee Aware

The bumble bee is widely used in agriculture as a very effective pollinator. They are able to pollinate species of plants that other pollinators cannot. You should be aware of the decrease of the bumble bee population due to destruction of habitats, pesticides, and some causes are unknown. "Bee Aware" came into fruition once I received a call from my property manager threatening me with a $100 fine if I didn't cut the grass. For many lawns in America, there a wide variety of plant and insect species that are crucial to the preservation of the soil, cutting those out creates an inhabitable space.

I did cut the grass but only enough to highlight the biodiversity that I find to be utterly beautiful. The triangle represents the "yield" sign, something most everyone can subconsciously recognize. The piece is rather large as you can see by the picture but, highlights the presence of this genetic diversity that exists in the lawn. The point is to illustrate the natural beauty of weeds and other small wild grasses, as well as what inhabits them.

The Hidden Impossible Triangle.
Wood, steel

This piece works on the Gestalt effect as in the mind, the recognition of a whole image does not have to be perceived being made up of the parts that exist within it already. Basically the principle of the piece is that it was made to serve as an optical illusion. The impossible triangle can only be seen within a very particular line of site. The Hidden Impossible Triangle is meant to have the full visual/mental attention of the viewer because if the viewer is able to create the triangle in their plain of sight, the piece will shift from three 3-D pieces into one 2-D whole.

Landscape - Painting

Anslem Kiefer has always been an artist that has persuaded my interests. The ambiguity of his painting/sculpting materials is what truly inspires me. As far as landscapes are concerned, pertain to German historical themes, I am sure that there are a few that you can imagine. These are two of his works, Resurrexit and from the Heaven and Earth Series. Kiefer began his artistic career as a photographer and shot films such as one that was mimicked the nazi salute. This film was meant to remind Germans that their culture was being destroyed by the third reich. This imagery exists throughout his lifetime of work.

Another artists that particularly interests me is Carl Andre. Andre is a minimalist sculptor and poet and these two pieces reflect both of those fields. The text is used in a way mimicking that of a technical topographical map.

Final idea for mas print

I have chosen this image to be the one that will be mass printed. I had ideas about more complicated drawings and line work but the more I took the technology into consideration, the better I was able to shape my idea. I have even considered completely removing the hand-drawn aspect of the image all together as seen in previous posts, drawn in MS-Paint. It can down to the function and movement the workings of the printer itself when I came to this conclusive drawing. My pen marks, will replicate that of the process of how a printer prints (inkjet in this case because, to my knowledge, is the most commonplace household printing device).

More MS Paint sketches - Compressed images

The thing about transferring paint drawings from a PC to a mac is the compression of the image when the 24 color bitmap images are saved as jpgs. The details of the compression are subtle yes, but they they condense a series of lines into one image. It is hard to notice at first but there are slight disfigurations that can be seen in each of the paint images.
